Invited by Dr. Nancy Targett, Dean of the College of Marine and Earth Studies / University of Delaware (CMES/UD), and Dr. Kuo-Chuin Wong, Professor of CMES, delegates from College of Oceanography and Environmental Science / Xiamen University (COE/XMU), Drs. Huasheng Hong, Yan Li and Weiran Pan visited CMES/UD, originally planned to attend the “University of Delaware – Xiamen University Coastal Ocean Processes Workshop” to discuss potential cooperation in scientific researches.

However, due to the visa delay, Dr. Yan Li and Weiran Pan could not attend this workshop as planned, so the workshop was changed to group and individual meetings combined with seminars.

Our delegates met with Dr. Nancy Targett, Dr. A. Denis Kirwan, Dr. Fabrice Veron, Dr. Arthur Trembanis, and some other scientists October 30 and November 3 on Newark campus. They also have a chance to meet with Dr. Jonathan Sharp, Dr. George Luther, and others, on Lewes campus October 31. They visited the Air-Sea Interaction Lab on Lewes campus led by Dr. Fabrice Veron. The R/V Hugh R. Sharp, showed around by Captain Bill on Lewes campus, which is a state-of-the-art platform for exploring and sampling the coastal ocean, impressed our delegates very much. They expressed their desires to work together on this vessel some time in the future.

This visit provided a good opportunity to colleagues at UD to know more about on-going researches at XMU, especially in regional seas. In addition, some current scientific researches on physical oceanography and coastal engineering were presented by UD scientists. Consequently, both sides agreed that further cooperation should be carried out.
